cant get scanner to work on epson sx218 well sick of it all

Asked by James Peters

bought new epson all in one ink jet printer ,as usual bugs and snags on 11.10 (,by the way it works ok in windows 7)

prints ok in 11.10 but for the life of me I cant get this printer to scan to desktop in ubuntu 11.10, tried everything ,

now considering not relying on linux for print and scan anymore cant do with the hassle of it all so i suppose ill have to revert to the old enemy w 7 again to scan and print !

If you had researched before you bought, you could have checked compatibility with your Ubuntu OS. It will work with Windows as Epson have made the DRIVERS for the printer. Sadly Epson support is very lacking for Linux so you will get issues. GOOD companies support Linux. These include (but are not limited to): HP, Brother and Canon. If you'd have grabbed one from these manufacturers (especially with HP), you wouln't have an issue as they make Linux drivers. With HP you wouldn't even have to do ANYTHING as the HPLIP software needed is in the default install, making it easier than Windows to install.

In short, RESEARCH what is available to you, then what you can afford, then what will work in Ubuntu. Support is getting a lot better (Canon once refused to support Linux but they are coming around) but sadly a lot of hardware simply isn't supported.

Buy HP next time :)

You can check the arch of your OS with:

uname -m

If you see 'i686', run this:

cd; wget http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/lsb/epson-inkjet/stable/debian/dists/lsb3.2/main/binary-i386/epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-320-sx218_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_i386.deb; sudo dpkg -i ./epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-320-sx218_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_i386.deb; rm ./epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-320-sx218_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_i386.deb; sudo apt-get -f install;

if you see 'x86_64', run this:

cd; wget http://linux.avasys.jp/drivers/lsb/epson-inkjet/stable/debian/dists/lsb3.2/main/binary-amd64/epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-320-sx218_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb; sudo dpkg -i ./epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-320-sx218_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb; rm ./epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-320-sx218_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb; sudo apt-get -f install
