CUPS does not recognize my printer

Asked by Michael Kanthal

I have a Canon Pixma MP610 printer/scanner which DID work w.my Ubuntu Linux 10.04 till recently. Now, the Printer Status says: "Canon MP610 may not be connected", but it IS connected.
On the printer status page, the operative line seems to be the Printer Status Message: /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb failed

I would appreciate any and all help.

FYI, I am NOT a techie!

Boot with the printer detached, log in and let the OS settle then connect the printer. Wait a few seconds then try using the device. Does this help?

Thanks for the quick reply!

Two things: one, for WHATEVER reason, it has worked the last 5 minutes, I don't think that I did anything to cause this, which causes ME concern!
Two, when you say "boot" I assume that to mean turn on the PC, correct? (I said I was not a techie...). And then "let the OS settle", do you mean to just leave the PC 'alone' and not do anything for a few mins?? And then plug in the printer's USB cable and try it?
I know w/my webcam I have to do that to get it to work, though it beats the heck out of me as to WHY that should be the case!
Anyway, I will use your advice the next time I start my PC, but I really don't understand why Linux has these idiosyncrasies after have been 'around' for quite some time.
But, again, many thanks!

"boot" = power off / on or reboot
"let the OS settle" = let all the startup apps run etc, so that the OS is ready to go.

I had no success at all w/any CUPS-related fixes, nor any re-booting.
However, I DID download some 'gutenprint' software for the Canon MP600 and that SEEMS to have resolved my printer 'invisibility' issue.
Thank you for all your effort and time.

Can you help with this problem?
