Hi all, well, here we go again, I upgraded to 11.10 and now my printer won't work. I've tried downloading drivers from canon europe, but no go. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Ian

It is more convenient for you to install the Canon driver from the repository maintained by Michael Gruz (I once tried compiling the driver and software, but the process was too cumbersome and buggy).

Turn off your All-in-One printer/scanner, uninstall the printer and the Canon software if you have already installed it, then open a Terminal and type the following commands:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install scangearmp-common scangearmp-ip4800series cnijfilter-common cnijfilter-ip4800series
This will install the required drivers, some utilities and the ScanGear software (it is actually a GIMP plugin).
Then, turn your printer on. It should be recognized and installed automatically.

The package names are "scangearmp-common" and "scangearmp-ip4800series" - check you have typed them correctly.

Also, note that in the Linux version ScanGear MP is a GIMP plugin, so you'll need to open GIMP and access ScanGear from there (it should pop up automatically when you open it). You can also use another standard Linux scanning application (like Skanlite for KDE).
