CUPS Printing problem

Asked by Jez

Ubuntu 11.10 64bit with Gnome Shell

HI,
Got a Kodak HERO 5.1 Wi-Fi printer from Santa. Trouble is even though I have set it up with CUPS 1.5.0 I cannot print anything.

From the "Printers" tab at http://localhost:631:

Description: Eastman Kodak Company KODAK HERO 5.1 AiO Printer
Location: Home
Driver: Kodak DigiSource 9110 Foomatic/Postscript (recommended) (grayscale, 2-sided printing)
Connection: dnssd://KodakHERO5.1+0682._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/
Defaults: job-sheets=none, none media=iso_a4_210x297mm sides=one-sided

Status: (Idle, Accepting Jobs, Not Shared)

When I try printing a test page I am now getting "Unable to write print data: Broken pipe" message.

CUPS detected and set up the printer and I can ping it ok, but so far have not been able to print anything at all in Ubuntu though it works fine in W****ws 7(!), Android phone, email print and Google cloud print.

Dont know if it is maybe wrong driver as CUPS setup gives a drop down box to choose one.

Here is error log:

Kodak hate Linux and refuse to support it. You will not get this working short of setting up a Windows box to watch a folder for new files and print any files copied there.

such a shame. with the company teetering on bankruptcy, they should open their eyes and realize that there's a large linux market.

Thanks for the replys.
Got this printer because the spec is good for the money and the ink is cheap. Never dreamed it would'nt work with Linux.
Funny how CUPS detected the printer and set it up. I'll just have to do all my PC printing on Win7.

Sadly its the usual case of poor or zero support from manufacturers. HP have a fantastic support for Linux and make drivers via the HPLIP project, this is default installed in ubuntu so most HP printers can simply be connected and be ready to roll, no drivers or messing around.
