Installing Canon Pixma MP160 on Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Steve Lake

I'm having problems re-installing my Canon Pixma MP160 all-in-one printer/copier/scanner.

I got it installed (eventually) when I originally installed Ubuntu 10.04 last year but I recently re-installed the OS (don't ask!) and can't find any up-to-date, workable advice on how to re-install the printer (the scanner part works OK, though).

I've managed to download and install the driver 'cnijfilter-mp160series' from http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2011/06/download-install-canon-printer-driver.html but whenever I try to print the job fails with 'no connection'.

Any thoughts how I can approach resolving this?

I've confirmed the driver has been installed:
dpkg --get-selections | grep cnij
gives me
cnijfilter-common install
cnijfilter-mp160series install

Aha! I've fixed it - and it was quite simple in the end...

- System > Administration > Log File Viewer
- Selected 'syslog' and spotted these lines from my previous attempts to use CUPS printer admin...
