Remove the printer and uninstall the driver (if you added one extra) then reinstall from scratch

Scratch is like square one, zero. If you remove all traces of the printer then reinstall it may start working

This seems to be a common problem with Lexmark printers, my X2650 printer fails, the driver (also Lexmark supplied) worked fine in previous Ubuntu versions but the system seems to try and run the printer without the driver and fails, but prevents the re-installation of the driver. When it asks for the printer connection to be made the Ubuntu 11.10 system then hijacks the connecting printer locking out the installation of the driver.
I know this doesn't solve the problem but others seem to have the same problem.

I'm currently having the same issue here. I upgraded my dad's desktop from natty to ocelot (clean install), and installed the official lexmark driver for the x5650 from their website, the driver install goes perfectly fine, just like it did in natty. but when I try to print, I keep getting a "the computer can't communicate with the printer" (http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/9355/screenshotat20111103221.png) error when i try to print. There was no problems at all in natty with this printer. And the driver is the same version as the one I was using before, so its not some change from lexmarks end. Iv found the scanner works fine with simple scan after I installed the current proposed updates (11-03-11). So, im not sure if this is a bug in cups, or whatever is handling communicating back and forth with the printer in general in ocelot. One odd thing I did noticed was that when looking for info using system profiler and benchmark, in the info for the printer it says that the printer isn't accepting jobs. might just be from the printer not working, but I thought I should throw that in.

I'v tried removing the drivers and re-installing them to see if maybe the install messed up. Didn't make a difference. I'v also tried to Install the printer on my personal laptop and see if this is a universal bug with this driver (or lexmark driver in general) or an issue from something with the hardware i have. And its the exact same thing (except the scanner doesn't seem to work now because my laptop doesn't doesn't have the "proposed" repo enabled.). If you have any ideas or need any info, or want me to try anything just ask. I kind of need this printer to work... and don't want to have to downgrade a perfectly good ubuntu install back to natty over a printer driver.

Can you help with this problem?
