CUPS not printing for one user

Asked by JC

I've just installed Ubuntu on my old HP Pavillion (Athlon XP 2.8 GHz), as a part of my home wireless network. Beside my own user, I've created another user for my wife, also with administrator permissions. We have a printer attached via USB to our iMac (also networking through the wi-fi router), which uses CUPS as printer server. Here is the issue: while the printer would print flawlessly (without asking anything) from my Ubuntu machine's own session, it would keep requiring authorization from my wife's, to no avail, no matter what userid and password is entered, and the print job would get held forever in the queue. Keep also in mind that the printer is shared by the iMac to be accessed by everyone, so no userid/password should be ever required.
I've examined the /etc/cups/printers.conf file and it had a line showing "AuthInfoRequired none", and in fact, "none" was the userid shown while the authorization is still requested every time a print job is sent from my wife's Ubuntu session. I've even removed that line (using sudo, of course), but after CUPS is restarted, that line reappears, and there's no behavior change.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi, if you attached your printer to your Ubuntu PC, do you find the same problems? Just to understand if the problem is about the user configuration on Ubuntu PC or about the CUPS server configuration on Mac PC. Thanks.

Unfortunately moving the printer close to the Ubuntu box is not really practical (the physical setup just does not allow to do that). However, I can tell you this much: the printer works well from the iMac from both local users (mine and my wife's), and also as a network printer from my own user in the Ubuntu box. What puzzles me is that, the print jobs generated by my wife's user all get stuck in the printer queue, all apparently requiring authorization, even though CUPS has been set not to. Furthermore, our respective userid and password are the same in both iMac and Ubuntu box, just to try to prevent this kind of issues from happening.

Another thing to consider is that I've installed Ubuntu using my own userid, and I've created my wife's user only when the box was completely functional.
Hope this helps. Thanks a lot.

Hi,

if you try to put the CUPS server ip on Firefox bar of your wife's Ubuntu User what happens? She is able to see the web interface of Cups server? Thanks many.

I've just changed the printer sharing permissions back and forth in the iMac and this time, somehow, the Ubuntu box seemed to have registered that from my wife's session, so now it works!
Thanks anyway, Massimo. This issue may now be closed.
