Print Error Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal

Asked by Mark_Y_Mark

Fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal and when I try to print anything I get "There was a problem processing document"... Then from Document Print Status trying to Reprint I get the same print Error. I also noticed I could not connect to Localhost either.
I tried reinstalling CUPS and the same thing happens. What should I do next?

I had a similar problem except that my error message was "Printer configuration error." I'm sorry if I'm giving a generic solution, but because I found similar complaints from many different users while trying to answer my problem, and because I doubt we all have the same printer/setups/error messages, here's a solution that helped me and might be able to help a lot of others who've lost print functionality after the update.

1) First, try re-installing your print drivers. This should be sufficient for many people.
2) In the process of driver re-install, you might find that there is a package dependency missing that was never missing before the update. If this is the case, google for that package and download it. You should be able to find a "transitional" or "dummy" package, which should be sufficient. Install it and any other missing dependencies.
3) Try step 1 again, restart your job, etc.

Hope it helps!

I just wanted to clarify that by "try re-installing your print drivers," I meant the ones for your printer, not just CUPS. I found that mine had been uninstalled in the cleanup process of updating to Natty Narwhal.

Your advise to re-install print drivers worked. I got the driver from http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/download/lsb/epson-inkjet/escpr/. I do appreciate the support you provided.

I had a Canon MX870 printer working just fine in Ubuntu 12.04 but after an update it stopped working. Following the above suggestion I deleted the printer and re-installed it. That brought it right back. Thanks Jenly.
