brother printer HL-2140 not print with 11.04

Asked by Neil

Hi
I am having a problem with my printer Brother HL-2140,
I have just reinstalled 11.04 32bit, turned on the printer so that Ubuntu can find the printer it installs the driver, but when I try to print a document for example, it just spits out blank pages, until I stop it, I ask for 1 copy and it just keeps spiting out blank pages 1 after another.
can anyone help me out please.
I have a canon ip 4200 as well no problems there.
all worked well in older Ubuntu's

Thanks
Neil

Delete the printer from Ubuntu and detach the USB connection, then run

cd; wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/brhl2140lpr-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; sudo dpkg -i ./brhl2140lpr-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; rm ./brhl2140lpr-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/cupswrapperHL2140-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; sudo dpkg -i ./cupswrapperHL2140-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; rm ./cupswrapperHL2140-2.0.2-1.i386.deb

Then attach the printer. Brother MAKE linux drivers, did you not think to go to their site for support? The Canon is a different printer entirely so is of zero value to a question regarding Brother printing.

Hi
yes i tried the site but having the same problem even using the help above.
1 st problem is I am getting the message of

The package is of bad quality
The installation of a package which violates the quality standards isn't allowed. This could cause serious problems on your computer. Please contact the person or organisation who provided this package file and include the details beneath.

and in the detail drop down box
Lintian check results for /home/goof/Downloads/brhl2140lpr-2.0.2-1.i386 (2).deb:
E: brhl2140lpr: maintainer-address-missing Brother Industries,Ltd

 http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/cupswrapperHL2140-2.0.2-1.i386.deb;
wont install at the end it says failed.

(using the download install with software centre)
I got the same message with other programs until downloaded the latest updates but these are the latest for the printer.

thanks
Neil

Wow not heard of that, ok then we can just tell the OS to do it and quit worrying:

cd; wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/brhl2140lpr-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; sudo dpkg --force-all -i ./brhl2140lpr-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; rm ./brhl2140lpr-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/cupswrapperHL2140-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; sudo dpkg --force-all -i ./cupswrapperHL2140-2.0.2-1.i386.deb; rm ./cupswrapperHL2140-2.0.2-1.i386.deb

Should do it

Had the same problem and found the suggestion that printer be installed with drivers for HL-2170W instead of HL-2140. This seemed to work for me.

well that fixed it, thanks
I just turned on the computer to get Brother's phone number so I could ask them for help.
But your idea fix it.

Easy problem to fix. Just install the driver for the HL-2170W (this fools the system), print out a test page, bingo!

Yes, I have the same problem too. Ubuntu Natty would churn out continuous BLANK pages when printing to Brother HL-2140L. Using the HL-2170W driver did fool the device and it printed properly. It baffles me why we need to even fool the printer in the first place, since Maverick and earlier were all working dang fine.

The two questions remain:

a. Where is the original driver that used to work perfectly in older Ubuntu versions?
b. Why is it NOT working now?

Thanks!

good questions!
I have found this with a few different things they just don't work as well.
I hate Unity to start with.

If you dislike Unity, log off and choose the session "gnome classic" at login, or just use a different desktop like KDE, XFCE etc. There are more desktop options than Gnome
