running Ux64 but printer driver is i386

Asked by Steve Smith

I was tech support for windows hardware issues but am still learning the superior OS of Ubuntu. Brother only offers the i386 driver for my printer so is there a way to get the i386 driver to work in Ubuntu x64? Thanks!

I do not believe Brother offers x64 drivers for much of their old stuff. But the 32 bit drivers do work.

Give it a go.

This is a new printer, the HL3040. There is a Linux 32 driver but the package manager gives the error, "Wrong Architecture i386". Is there a way to try to get by this error? In Windows you can force a driver to see if it will work, how is that done in Ubuntu?
Thanks!

Do you have ia32-lib package installed?

I'll check. I'm guessing that is the 32 bit layer used by the 64 bit system. Thanks for taking the time to help! I'll update the status after I check if that lib file is installed.

The ia32-lib package is installed. I even reinstalled it, rebooted, and tried to install the brother printer driver again... and got the same results, "wrong Architecture i386". Any other ideas?
Thanks!

You can try force installing it anyway; the actual package contents that do the core work I believe ar noarch anyway.

Can you help with this problem?
