Can't print via D-link DPR-1260

Asked by John Peschken

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04. Sweet! Except for the fact that I can't seem to print trough my D-Link DPR-1260 wireless print server. It works fine though my wife's XP Machine, and I can print if I hook the printer up to my USB port. As I understand it, I am trying to configure this as an LPD/LPR printer.

I go though the printer dialogs, and for "Host" I have tried "DPR1260" and "dlink-fbfce8". I don't see a "host name" on the 1260's device info page, but it does list a "Device Name" where it reads "DPR1260 (dlink-fbfce8)". When I use either of these, I go though installing drivers, but I get an error telling me it can't be found. The printer state sits at "Stopped - Unable to locate DPR1260 (or dlink-fbfce8)" and the job just sits there. Under policies, the "Enabled" check box gets unchecked.

I get a little different result if I put the ip address of the DPR1260 into the Device URI. Here the printer state says "Processing - Connecting to printer ...", but apparently it never connects. Eventually, I get a floating message that says the printer may not be connected. Stuff just sits in the queue.

The queue is "deskjet5100" as reported by the DPR1260

So, I have tried these combinations:
lpd://DPR1260/deskjet5100
lpd://dlink-fbfce8/deskjet5100
lpd://192.168.1.12/deskjet5100

I definitely have LPD turned on in the DPR1260.

I am out of ideas.

Can you ping the server. I'm guessing 192.168.1.12 is the IP of the print server.

Yup, i can ping it.

I can also reach the browser based configuration page for the device, and it functions with the XP machine. So, it is apparently functioning and connected to the network just fine.

I figure the problem is either:
A. I do not have the unit configured correctly to work with Ubuntu (I think enabling LPD is all that is supposed to be necessary).

B I am not correctly telling Ubuntu how to use it, My money is on this one, as I am a Linux newbie,

I had already seen the answer referenced above. That's where I got most of the ideas I have tried so far. I did re-read it, and think I understand everything, I tried every variation I can think of on those answers, but still no go. Apparently I am missing something, but I have no idea what it might be.

I am definitely having a crisis of faith here.

Besides the printer trouble (There's a Saturday I'll never get back) I find the media player (Rhythmbox) to be pretty weak. It's missing codecs and I don't understand how to get them, album art doesn't get retrieved.

I suppose it's all part of learning a new OS, but I am about this |---| far from just putting XP back on this thing, I like Ubuntu better, but at least I understood XP. I may not be geek enough to fight through the inevitable learning curve.

Seems you use the network installer for printers to specify the IP as 192.168.1.12 and the port as the port listed on the web controller page (port 1,2,3 & 4 sound sensible). See what you get.

Seems to be answered here but needs an account:

Bummer. The "experts-exchange" link needs some sort of subscription,
apparently. As much as I basically liked it, I have about reached my
saturation point with Ubuntu. I have put XP back on the thing, At least I
understand it.

Well, my frustration has subsided a little. I'm running on XP now. I am warming to the idea of trying Ubuntu again. The replies here all suggest things I have already tried, so I'm thinking I must have been close to making it work but missed something somehow. I know the hardware works if I'm not using Ubuntu and others have used this hardware with Ubuntu, so it must be a configuration problem. I think I just need to put on my patience hat and try again soon.

No. It was Ubuntu only. For now, I have gone back to WinXP.

As a suggestion: to have future better experience install and use Ubuntu in dual boot mode.

I usually install it on Win damaged pc (viruses or spyware), Ubuntu can access to Win partitions, in this way i found it is useful as a rescue to clean or recover data from unbootable Win.

After installed and configured my customer are happy to use it and them don't use window anymore.

The best i can do for my customers is to install Windows in virtualbox so they can use Ubuntu and Win at the same time.

Good luck and best regards

I finally got it to work. It's not really a bug. There were two reasons for my troubles.

I finally figured out that the host field in the LPD.LPR print setup box wanted an ip address. I had been trying to use the host name, shown as "DPR1260 (dlink-fbfce8)" when you look at the configuration page of the DPR1260. I had tried the whole host name, and each of the two parts of it separately. Maybe there is a way to make it clearer that this field needs (might need?) an ip address not a name. If it's always an ip, maybe a " . . . " template would help.

This was complicated by the fact that the ip address of the dLink was jumping around. It was in DHCP mode. My failed attempts to use a host name of some sort was causing the dLink to lock up. On resetting, the ip address would change. I was trying to connect to a moving target.

So, it was the combination of trying to hit a moving target print server and not knowing I needed an ip rather than a name for the host.

You can add a name to IP resolution in /etc/hosts

You can then use a name but if its working ok then don't touch it :)
