Gary, so it seems that I have finally reached the state of having all info to fix the problem for your printer model. I will change the exception (quirk) rule for your printer in the USB CUPS backend so that the usblp kernel module does not get re-attached after a print job has finished. After that the HL-1440 will just work with the new USB backend. Thank you very much for all the testing.
I will issue the changes also for Ubuntu Precise (stable release update, SRU), so please stay tuned as you will have to test the proposed SRU package for Precise as soon as it gets available for testing.
