Lexmark Z2300 stopped working with Linux Mint 17

Asked by Dave

Lexmark Z2300 was working fine with Linux Mint 17
Suddenly couple of days ago stopped working.

I haven't changed anything in my set-up or in CUPS. (Thought there may have been updates)

I tested the printer with two other operating systems & it's still working fine with those. The problem is ONLY with Linux Mint 17....

It doesn't matter what it is I try to print:
I get the usual notification that a print has been queued.
Then there is a delay.
Then I get the "Document Print Status (my jobs)" window with a list of all the 'Stopped' attempts to print, plus an error message:
"There was a problem processing document '(doc name)' (job No.)"

If I hit the 'Diagnose' button, there is another delay, I then get:
"Status Messages"
There are status messages associated with this queue.
The printer's state message is: 'Rendering completed'.

If I then 'Enable Debugging' I get the following Error Log:

This is "Questions for Ubuntu", it is not "Questions for Linux Mint".

You would be better to ask on the Linux Mint Forums - http://forums.linuxmint.com/

Yeah I tried that... loads of people look at the question, but I get no
replies!

The first thing I did was try the Linux Mint Forum.
Any questions I ask about printing seem to be ignored.
Lots of people read them, but no one replies.
That's why I came to CUPS

The CUPS forum page has a link for "QUESTIONS ABOUT LINUX" it doesn't specify Mint or Ubuntu.

And, linux Mint uses a lot of Ubuntu stuff, I don't know where the boundaries are. I'm not a techie.

This website is for official Canonical versions of Ubuntu, It is not for any distro "based" on Ubuntu.

I guess the log snippet

E [27/Nov/2014:17:34:42 +0000] Unknown directive JobPrivateAccess on line 86 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
E [27/Nov/2014:17:34:42 +0000] Unknown directive JobPrivateValues on line 87 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
E [27/Nov/2014:17:34:42 +0000] Unknown directive SubscriptionPrivateAccess on line 88 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
E [27/Nov/2014:17:34:42 +0000] Unknown directive SubscriptionPrivateValues on line 89 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.

indicates unexpected contents in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

What are the contents of your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

Can you revert to the original one and check whether that changes anything?

OK, I can accept that....
But when I don't get answers from the Linux Mint people, and others tell me
to use the CUPS forum.
I got this link from the CUPS forum.
There doesn't seem to be any real CUPS forum that will answer or attempt to
answer my question?

Thanks Manfred but nothing has changed in "/etc/cups/cupsd.conf"
Like I say, for weeks it's been running with no problems at all, then all
of a sudden nothing will print.
I haven't touched "/etc/cups/cupsd.conf"

Here are it's contents anyway:

Mint is not supported by the Ubuntu community. It has it's own support channels which are entirely separate from Ubuntu. I suggest you post here :

Hmmm People don't read these threads before answering....
Thanks actionparsnip, but if you had read the thread you would have seen me say:

"The first thing I did was try the Linux Mint Forum.

I'm not a techie."

So what we're saying here is basically, "you don't have the right OS for getting help with problems"

Probably best go back to Microsoft then..... Linux Mint forum can't help, CUPS forum can't help.
I need to use my printer...... No options really!

Ho hum...

It doesn't matter if Mint uses a lot of Ubuntu stuff, the support communities are separate. NONE of the "Ubuntu based" distributions are supported by the Ubuntu community.

By the same token, Ubuntu is based on Debian but if you post on Debian forums for Ubuntu support you will be told to post on the Ubuntu support forums.

I don't know what you think stating "Probably best go back to Microsoft then" achieves....it doesn't make anyone want to help you any more or any less.

You are using Mint. If your Mint community is not very active then maybe consider installing Ubuntu with a very active community

OK, so maybe as you say moving to Ubuntu would be another option as well as going back to Microsoft.

I'm really not sure what all this "make people want to help you any more or any less" stuff is about???

I'm not sitting here like some child thinking some people want to help others just don't want to! How stupid would that be!

I'm simply stating black & white facts. With the system I've got, I now can't use my printer, with Microsoft I can, so a valid logical solution to my problem - as I don't seem able to get the help I need - would be to go back to using a Microsoft OS

If you reading some sort of attempt at emotional blackmail into those words, then, again, how stupid is that!

I reiterate however (and have seen others on this forum saying the same) that in the CUPS FORUM (https://www.cups.org/str.php?U) it clearly says: "Report A Linux Printing Problem"

It does not say "Report An Ubuntu Linux Printing Problem"

So you will be getting lots of people with Linux problems forwarded to you who haven't a clue whether their particular 'Linux' printing problem is a generic Linux problem or peculiar to the Ubuntu Distribution of Linux.

Thank you for your input anyway, it's much appreciated.

You are using Mint. Mint isn't supported here. It's that simple

Your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf is wrong

JobPrivateAccess default
JobPrivateValues default
SubscriptionPrivateAccess default
SubscriptionPrivateValues default

are allowed only inside a policy paragraph.

As I already stated: Try reverting to the original cupsd.conf
Or is that wrong sample cupsd.conf the one provided by Mint?

OK. I'm glad you found something wrong.
I'm 100% baffled as to how it came to be wrong, as I've never been anywhere near it.
Everything has worked perfectly until a few days ago, then all of a sudden nothing at all will print.

So I'm really not sure how I can answer your question Manfred, as I've never been anywhere near the cupsd.conf file. And like I say up until a few day ago everything worked absolutely fine.

So... If it's wrong, do you know what I need to do to make it right? Keeping in mind that I've not touched it at all, so I wouldn't know how or why it has become wrong?

I haven't a clue what Mint originally supplied me with, or if Mint have themselves changed and corrupted it in the last few days.
How would I find that out?

We have some knowledge about Ubuntu and try helping users with problems in Ubuntu.
I do not know any details in Mint, so I cannot help further.
Please ask in the Linux Mint forum.

Thank you...
I did find a file in the /etc/cups folder called cupsd.conf.O which was
dated 27/11/14
So I saved the current one and renamed this '.O' file to become the current
cupsd.conf
I then re-booted, and tried to print, but got the same result. And although
the two files are of slightly different size, the last few lines are
identical in both, so this thing you say is wrong, was wrong in that
version too.

After lots of chasing, I just got a reply from Linux Mint forum:

"Linux Mint is fully compatible with Ubuntu. You can search for solutions for the Ubuntu package base that your Linux Mint version uses (listed on http://www.linuxmint.com/download_all.php). Mint 17 uses Ubuntu 14.04 as a package base, and thus uses the same CUPS software."

Could I not get Ubuntu support for the 14.04 package base?

Do I really have to change my operating system because I can't find the right help to sort what seems to be a CUPS problem?

Would it help if I submitted a new problem with the same error information but only saying that the problem is with Ubuntu 14.04 and CUPS?

Please provide the output of the following terminal commands

lsb_release -a
uname -a
apt-cache policy cups
dpkg-query --search '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf*'

Thanks.
All worked except the last command which returned:

dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /etc/cups/cupsd.conf*

So, to try to save time & attempt to help, I looked up the command and it said you can check the whole directory.
so I ran the command as follows:

dpkg-query --search /etc/cups

Which gives an output of:

cups-daemon, cups-browsed, cups: /etc/cups

Here are all the responses:

Do you have the file /usr/share/cups/cupsd.conf.default on your system?
Can you compare it to your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file?
