Need to auto update my system starting from 00.05 to 3.00 am

Asked by john ziegler

I am trying to use Gnome-schedule to schedule the download and installation of system updates at midnight because I have Hughesnet and it does not count against my download allotment if I do it from midnight to 3am. I thought I had it set up right and I used launchupdate.sh as the command to start the update manager at 00:05 in the morning but it did not start. Is that the right command? Is there a better way to schedule the updates?

The update process requires you to enter the password when it runs. How did you craft that script in order to avoid being there sitting at the computer at 00:05 and typing the password?

I didn't. I forgot about that part. I guess that is why it did not run. I am not even sure what executable file to use to start update manager from any type of scheduler. I have since installed fcron, which uninstalled Gnome-scheduler, but I don't see it in the applications menu and I don't know how to get to it. I just want a way to schedule system updates at midnight so I won't run into download restrictions from Hughesnet. If you could explain how to do that with cron or any other way, it would be very helpful. I am not sure how to right the script to do this or where to put it. Cron sounds very powerful but I have not learned how to use it correctly, yet.
