Cannot change the windows border by changing the themes...

Asked by emigrant

hi all,
i have a annoying problem,
that i cannot change the windows border by changing the themes although the windows color and appearance get changed.
if i set the desktop effect to 'none' then everything works fine. but in 'normal' and 'extra' levels the problem exists.

just installed karmic and have not done any additional udpates or installations of other apps such as emerald/beryl.
system info:

core2duo E8400 @ 3 Ghz
2GB ram
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV505 CE [Radeon X1550 64-bit]

links to some screenshots has been added at the bottom for clarity (see the border of the 'apprearance preferance' window; please ask any other info if i have failed to provide enough.

thank you very much for reading and your helping mind.

Not really a clue, but before suspecting a graphic issue..., did you install
compizconfig-settings-manager
It will appear in system preferences after installation.
In section 'general' is an option 'Gnome compatibility', I'd enable this and 'Window decoration' should be enabled too.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/ConfiguringCompiz

After switching effects I'd logout/in.
Further diagnose can be made in log files, such as .xsession-errors (hidden file in your /home directory), and Xorg.0.log (system administration -> log viewer)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxLogFiles

You may also check correct installation
System Administration -> Hardware drivers

I just had the same issue and tracked it down.
Compiz can use its own "window decorator", which is what displays the window title bar and buttons.
You probably have emerald installed, a decorator that has its own themes (check if there's Emerald Themes in your Preferences or use
dpkg -l emerald
to see if it's installed.)
To disable emerald and use the Gnome theme, run
sudo apt-get remove emerald
and restart compiz or log out & back in.
