How can I re-enable compositing?

Asked by Amr Hassan

I installed jaunty today and everything was going fine, until I installed some updates. After reboot my compositing is gone. Gnome-Do displays this message "Your display is not properly configured for theme and animation support. To use these features, you must enable compositing."
I can't also re-enable compiz effects. It was all working fine out-of-the-box before the update.

I think some of the updates were compiz-related. How can I enable compositing back?
I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525.

Thanks.

I installed fusion-icon. Did "Reload Window Manager" and everything went back to normal. Except that I now have to do this with everytime I reboot. It's really annoying.

I am having the same problem on my Lenovo Ideapad Y510. Running the fusion-icon program allows me to use compositing, but I have to do so after a restart.

My graphics card is same as above ever rev 03

Hi Amr Hassan & Elaine Normandy,

How about to add fusion-icon at session startup (System > Preferences > Sessions) ?
Then click Add
Name : Fusion Icon
Command: fusion-icon
Comment: Desktop Effect

Click OK then try to reboot your ubuntu. Cheers..

but not just lauching fusion-icon that fixes it, it's the "Reload Window Manager". Plus I lose my brightness settings and it resets to full brightness.

For me, just launching fusion-icon re-enables compositing.

This is the output of "compiz -c" from the terminal:
amr@gort:~$ compiz -c
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Blacklisted PCIID '8086:2a02' found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

and this is my xorg.conf file:

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
 Monitor "Configured Monitor"
 Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
 Option "DontZap" "False"
EndSection

Disabling Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" doesn't make any difference.

Try to add to xorg.conf in device section:
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"

Actually this is default since Intrepid.

I am having the same issue on my Dell XPS M1330. I had disabled compiz after installing RC1. I did not bother to test compiz after some upgrade.

But yesterday when i tried enabling compiz through System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->Normal, the good old "Desktop effects could not be enabled" appears. I have not tried 'fusion-icon' program.

My graphics card info:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Will update you on the progress.
