Compiz effects on Dell mini 9?

Asked by mrlopes

Hi...

Is it possible to run compiz desktop effect on a Dell Mini 9 laptop?

eg.
Wobbly windows, animated windows etc

There are no option for it in the appearance menu.

I've tried installing "Compiz-Settings-manager" but any chages made take no effect.

Please advise, thanks

I don't have a Dell Mini, but this blog post looks very informative. Let us know if it helps. :)

Thanks for your reply but it doesn't help me.

The step by step information does not relate to my OS.

i.e.
In the link it asks you to remove some files to be able to run Compiz but those files are already missing.

The Dell Mini 9 is capable of running Compiz (I have one). The default Dell Ubuntu which comes pre-installed has some custom packages, so enabling compiz may be a bit different. Normally you can go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects Tab and click "Normal". This should enable Compiz. You can also switch to compiz with the command "compiz --replace" executed from a terminal or in the Alt +F2 Run Application box.

If you install Ubuntu Netbook Remix, Compiz is glitchy while using the Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface. I don't know if it has any problems with the Dell application switcher, but it works fine in the Classic desktop mode.

By the way, I have installed Ubuntu Jaunty (Pre-release version 9.04) Netbook Remix edition and it works great. I haven't actually tried enabling compiz in the default 8.04 Dell install, but it should work, as your hardware does support it.
