Poor Graphics and Firefox Performance with Intrepid

Asked by RichPicker

I kept Feisty as long as I could. It was working very well. After upgrading to Intrepid I have had poor Firefox performance, and distorted graphics.

Firefox is sometimes very slow to load a page. While it is loading, the screen turns grey color as if the laptop is going to sleep. When Firfox first opens, it is scratchy, scrambled, and distorted.

Regardless of which program I am running, when the laptop is waked up from sleeping, the screen is very distorted, scratchy, and scrambled for a few seconds.

Totem is extremely slow to start. While it is starting, the screen flashes and flickers and is distorted.

Here is what I've done to try to fix it so far, but none of them have solved it:

I am using a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. Have run Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, and now Intrepid. I will appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you.

Everything seems in order, don't know what may be causing these issues.

In the last few days there were 2 updates to the xserver-xorg-video-intel package, which contain the video driver for your card. I recommend you make a "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel" so you have the latest updates, maybe that solves your problem.

If not, you can try using the old "i810" driver, which for some people works better. To do so, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf like this:

Section "Device"
 Driver "i810"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
 Monitor "Configured Monitor"
 Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

After this, restart X and let's hope you get your video fixed.

Not good.

I issued this command: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

All seemed okay, until I shutdown and restarted the laptop. Then, all I got was a TEXT login screen. Entered login and password, and got this only rich@rich-laptop:~$

I tried booting different ways - recovery mode, etc. But nothing helped.

I did a clean install from the Intrepid iso CD. I haven't backed up for a few days, so of course I lost data. It will now be several days to get the laptop set up again with synaptics, alsa, etc.

And the graphics are still bad. I'll contact you again next week after I get the laptop running fully again.

I have Intrepid re-installed.

1. Please know that I am a common computer user. I am nothing close to a UNIX administrator, and I know nothing of the inner workings of a computer. I am using Ubuntu as a way to support open source. I need quite a bit of help to get my laptop set up and running each time I upgrade.

2. What did I do wrong when I entered that command? Why did it kill my machine the way it did? How can I prevent that in the future? It cost me a lot of time and data.

3. I would say that the touchpad performs terribly. But after closer observation, I think it is because the laptop, and especially Firefox, is running very slowly with Intrepid. I must click several times, repeatedly. And sometimes I click a link and nothing happens. I have adjusted the touchpad several times, but the laptop continues to be very slow to respond to the clicks.

4. The graphics are still troubling. Something is wrong. Is it a problem with Firefox 3?

5. Totem still loads very slowly. Once it is running, I press Ctrl+O to open a file. Then when I double-click the file to open it, nothing happens. It is very very slow to open and respond to the touchpad. I have to select the file and then press enter to open it.

6. Something new has developed. When I start the laptop and Ubuntu loads and the 'song' plays, I hear the song being played twice - the second one jumbled on top of the first. The sound/song is scrambled.

7. Are laptops loosing their support in Ubuntu?

Lots of questions. I do appreciate your help. Without your help I would not be able to use Ubuntu.

Well, sorry you had to reinstall everything, but even though you had no graphical interface, it was fixable. You usually don't have to reinstall with Linux, unless you really, really mess up.

With "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel" you updated your video driver, I don't think you did something wrong. It must be something related to your video BIOS or a driver bug. If the updated driver did not work, you can try updating your BIOS if an update is available.

As for the sound, did it work correctly before?

In general, as a new user, this could come in handy:

Thank you for the Ubuntu:Intrepid link.

None of these problems existed with Feisty. I ran Feisty as long as I could. Intrepid is the problem. All these problems arrived with Intrepid. Too much to get a Dell laptop running with Ubuntu, in my opinion. I've been using Ubuntu since 2007, Dapper, and every time I upgrade I go through this long list of problems.

Reading the link you sent me, I realize I have been stupid to switch to Intrepid, because it is not LTS. The person who raved about how wonderful Intrepid is told me it is LTS. I made a mistake. Sorry for bothering you.

Intrepid is not an LTS release; The last LTS was 8.04 (Feisty), and the next LTS will come out around 2010 (they come out about every two years). Every six months there's a "point release", so a few days ago 8.04.2 was released.

There's nothing wrong in using a non-LTS release. Intrepid has been flawless for me, and I've installed it in various computers with very different hardware, but as in your case, sometimes something goes wrong and ugly.

If Feisty works for you and you don't mind not using the latest version, they stick with it. You'll have security updates for 2+ more years.

And it is always a pleasure to help.

I left Feisty because the repositories are gone or moved. I was told by a senior Help Member to switch to Intrepid - that is works better.
It takes up to 65 seconds for a touchpad tap to register. Am I to just go back to Feisty? There is no willingness to identify and solve any problems? Are problems an inconvenience? Confused...

Solved. Finally.
Compiz was causing the slowness and poor graphics. I removed Compiz and now it works perfectly.
