compiz fusion can't work on my laptop whose mainboard is vn896

Asked by yejustme

My laptop is Benq r42-119 and its mainboard is vn896 (graphic card is chrome9).
I installed ubuntu 8.04 LTS successfully but compiz fusion can't work although I installed the driver provided by the vender VIA.
The driver package says that AIGLX is availiable with their driver. Refer to http://linux.via.com.tw/support/downloadFiles.action
I do install the driver as what is said in the "readme" file of that package.
When I try to run compiz fusion ,X reboot and I have to login again.
When I try to run the script "compiz check" to do some test , X reboot too.

Some one with the same mainboard tell me to edit xorg.conf and add the following option to the section "Devices" : option "LCDPort" "DFP_HIGHLOW" .But the screen turn into black after I do that and reboot and system.I have no choice to recover the xorg.conf.

The screen tells me "PCI : BIOS bug #81[49435000] found "when ubuntu boot. But the laptop work well(2D display, sound ,network and so on)except compiz fusion.
Does this bug has something with the problem?

How to make compiz fusion work on my lap top ?Longing for your answer.

Hi,

I suggest manually compiling all the 2D and 3D modules described here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

Don't forget to also manually compile and install libdrm

Hope it helps,

Regards,

Mark

download the ubuntu 8.04 driver from via arena then install it...

after that edit the xorg.conf

after that use this:

gtksu gedit /usr/bin/compiz

find this line on the program

WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810 fglrx"

then insert [via]

should be look like this

WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810 via fglrx"

the bad thing is when you are using compiz and want to watch dvdrip movies you cant see a picture using vlc media player..

just disable the visual effect using the no visualization

atleast compiz works.. : ) : P
