No ubuntu desktop after install "complete"

Asked by coleenp

I installed ubuntu on a Dell Dimension 2400 and it claims that it succeeded. Machine has 512m RAM 80g disk, something like that. Ubuntu is the only OS on there now as the windows xp was too virus laden to live.

From the live (?) install ISO cd, in the demo mode, it only shows the linux gnome window manager in graphics safe mode, otherwise I get the black screen of death with the mouse-movable circle.

Booting from the hard drive, I get a nice drumbeat, login prompt, but when I log in I get a white screen of death with a cursor on it. Nothing to click on and no way out. So it looks like gdm works fine.

The monitor is a 19 inch flat screen Dell version. It must be the graphics version confusing gnome?

We can boot in recovery mode.

This ubunto CD installed fine under VirtualBox on my newer Dell Vista system. It's not the CD.
