firefox browser problems

Asked by Tom

What could be the reason for my browser (Firefox 3, Ubuntu 8.04) missing its top bar when loaded. i.e. no minimize, maximize or exit buttons. It also will flash, which gets steadily worse if I do not go to file and click on quit. This has happened before but usually I can re-start the computer and it goes away. This time that did not work. Had to ask this question from another computer!! What am I doing wrong or what could it be. How also do you start Firefox in safe mode? Thanks,

Tom

I would guess this is rather a problem of the Window Manager than of Firefox itself.

Perhaps try to (re-)execute metacity while your Firefox is running, open a terminal and type 'metacity' or 'metacity --replace'

Do you use compiz as Window manager? Perhaps some broken Window Rule prevents the Titlebar of the Firefox-window to be shown. perhaps try 'compiz' or 'compiz --replace' in a terminal

Perhaps check out Bug #303798 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/303798) from time to time, this is perhaps the same problem...

Thanks for the response. I am not sure if I use compiz or not or how to check. I stay pretty much with what Ubuntu recommends and updates. I figured out the command for opening in safe mode and it now seems to work fine. Not sure what I am doing every so often to cause this.

P.S. to last post. I am most puzzled by the flashing of the screen which progressively gets worse with time.

Cool, i think there's 3 of us at least that have the same user-name in here. Sorry if the rest of you guys are getting embarrassed about my postings in various places. Good luck and have fun :)

To check/enable/disable Compiz [ visual effects] go to Gnome main menu:
System → Preferences → Appearance → [Visual effects]

Hope this help

This is all totally fasinating -- it does not fix anything == but does waste electronic space. This is the main reason I dislike Linux. I did an update and now have to un-install Firefox and hope for the best. Is nothing ever checked before they suggest or do they just use the user as the test field????????????
