desktop effects not working with NVIDIA 7900 graphics card

Asked by O011235813

Hey,

I'm very new to linux, I have been using it for only 2 days. I want to get the desktop effects to be enabled for my 7900 graphics card. Here are the steps i have taken to try to get them to work:

1. Install Ubuntu
2. Install updates
3. restart
4. change the appearance to clearlooks
5. Install and enable drivers
6. Install compiz
7. restart

and after i restart, i end up in a black screen with white text. It resembles the terminal, but I never get to the actual linux desktop.

part of what's written in the white text:

"kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot....

Ubuntu 8.10 daniel-laptop ttyl
daniel-laptop login:
passwrd:"

how do i fix this/get this to work?
Thank you for all the help, it's greatly appreciated.

You can try installing envyng-gtk

When it was installed, go to Applications>System tools>Envyng and you only have to follow the wizard.

Can you?

hey i figured it out,

i was using 8.10, which apparently doesn't support my graphics card yet, i believe. So, i went and got 8.04 and it's working now. Thanks for all the help :D

If you go to system -> Administration -> Software Sources and Updates tabs, check the Pre-released. Do a updated after that. It solved the problem for me. There a lot of package that is not fully release for 8.10 I think, so taking pre-release seem to be the solution for now.
