There appears to be a three different drivers for S3 GPU´s and it is important to install the proper driver.

Please open a terminal from Applications-> Accessories-> Terminal and type or paste

lspci | grep -i vga

Please tell the output of this command.

Thanks

I was not expecting VIA Unichrome Pro IGP.

I will definitely need more information. Please also provide

glxinfo | grep -i render

Thank you

Desktop effects may not be available with this card. VIA has a bad reputation when it comes to providing open source drivers for the linux community.

From the looks of your output you may already have the ubuntu unichrome driver installed. To double check you can type

sudo dpkg --get-selections | grep -i unichrome

If the output says

xserver-xorg-video-unichrome

then the ubuntu driver is already installed.

Also please read this thread from Ubuntu Forums. I am sorry to say that even the driver from VIA´s website does not appear to enable desktop effects.
