how do I disable compiz effects?

Asked by Sbn

I want to be able to see what's on my desktop again... Tired of all the fancy effects etc and just want to get back to basic. I selected no effects in the appearance menu but nothing happened, so what must I do?

If you go into Advanced Desktop Effect Settings
in System you can just turn them off. untick them
or uninstall compiz

Thanks Neil
I don't have the Advanced Desktop Effects option in System, but I had Compz Cofig before I uninstalled it just now.
Now That Compiz is removed I still can't see or manage files on the desktop...

Did you install compiz from other source (not official Ubuntu repository)?

Perhaps it will help if you create a file ~/.gnomerc with the following text:

export WINDOW_MANAGER=/usr/bin/metacity

...that should make sure metacity is used instead of compiz. Also make sure metacity is installed (sudo apt-get install metacity).

If the "no effects" didn't work, maybe you have to set the configuration in gconf, go to:
Applications > Accessories > Terminal, execute:
gconftool -s -t string /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/current /usr/bin/metacity
gconftool -s -t string /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/default /usr/bin/metacity

Log out and log back in, that should do it :)
