desktop effects could not be enabled

I am unable to enable desktop effects .I get following error .
ramesh@Jothimani:~$ compiz
Checking for Xgl: not present.
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
Window manager warning: Log level 16: Error converting selection
Window manager warning: Log level 16: Error converting selection

if i use the command sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl i am unable to login after restart plz solve my problem!!!!

Please paste the output of the following command:

lspci

and please provide some info about your system specs...

command in a terminal and paste the output here please

Hmm

I think you need Xgl in order to use compiz (just install the xserver-xgl package). Your driver doesn't provide the needed infrastructure for Compiz to work.

sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl

i reinstalled ubuntu in normal mode.now desktop effects are working
