Windows border not visible

Asked by Sky1927

Hello, I'm not a linux expert and I think I must've done something fatal. I can't see my windows border, and as such I can't minimise or move my windows around. I saw the solution provided for Question #20756 and I am using Compiz and tried the solution offered but it wasn't helpful. I use this PC as my research PC so I perform all experiments on it. What have I done wrong and can it be rectified.

I had the same problem - here's what I did.

In a terminal, I entered:

metacity --replace

The window borders came back, but the terminal seemed to be stuck. I tried to close the terminal and the terminal window disappeared, but it's button stayed on my taskbar. I couldn't reopen it. While trying other things (opening other apps), I noticed I lost window borders again.

I restarted the computer.

After restart, I immediately opened a terminal.
Again, I entered:

metacity --replace

and again, it seemed to get stuck. Instead of closing the terminal window, I clicked 'File' --> 'Open Tab' and opened a new, unstuck terminal in a new tab, all within the same window. In the new terminal tab, I entered:

compiz --replace

The terminal spat out a string of data and info for a couple of seconds. When it finished, everything was fixed.

I take that all back. I restarted the computer and I'm back with no window borders again. ugh!

I didn't realize that the terminal was stuck again after entering: compiz --replace. When I try to close the terminal, it warns me that a process is still running and closing the window will kill the process. If I close it anyway, sometimes the window borders stay and sometimes they don't. But every time I restart the computer, it reverts back to 'no window borders'. So, I'm still trying to figure it out.

It's strange, because everything worked fine for months. (Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty - Gnome)

Thank you, marcobra. I'll go that route next time.

I figured it out, by the way. I ended up completely removing compiz and installing it again. I then went and set the settings in System-->Preferences-->Appearance-->Visual Effects to 'Normal' instead of 'None'. I don't know if uninstalling and reinstalling were necessary. Everything else that I could find and understand about this issue didn't SEEM to work as I tried them. I don't know if any of those steps were crucial to getting it working properly, either.

But it works now. Thanks Ubuntu Help Forums!! I feel like I'm actually learning! :)
