Dear o.k,

I am unsure as to what you are asking; however, I believe that it can be one of two things:

1. Does the Compiz Fusion software support my particular architecture?
2. Does my video card have the right "specs" to run Compiz Fusion nicely?

To clarify, please tell me if you are asking Question 1 or Question 2. Also, can you please provide some more information about the video card in your computer? For instance: the amount of on-board memory.

Dear o.k,

To get the amount of memory that your video card has, please run the command "lspci -v -s 01:00.0" (without the quotation marks) in the terminal of your choice.

If you are still stuck, follow the guide given here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-find-linux-vga-video-card-ram/.

Dear o.k,

So you have a 128MB video card. With respect to performance, this is more than sufficient to run Compiz Fusion.

Now, have you installed Ubuntu on the computer that you are referring to?

I dont think it would matter. You probably have ubuntu if the theme is orange. Kubuntu if the theme is blue.

Have you enabled the proprietary drivers? Have you tried enabling advanced desktop effects?

Hello to have compiz fusion enabled on your system:
you need to have extra repositories enabled..
To enable all the software repositories do
Go to system --> Preferences --> Software sources
Under the Ubuntu software sources check all the available boxes (Note: just in case if you want 3rd party softwares check everything)
Now all the software repositories enabled, in ubuntu 7.10..
and execute sudo apt-get update command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)
that should load all the repositories..

For more info on enabling the repositories ref:
http://www.fsdaily.com/Beginners/How_to_enable_extra_repositories_in_Ubuntu_7-10_and_get_cool_stuff

Then to install Compiz fusion refer the link you had earlier referred
i.e
http://www.howtoforge.com/compiz-fusion-ubuntu-gutsy-gibbon-ati-mobility-radeon-9200
and install compiz fusion (its a nice site with some great screenshots)

and below are the most used short cuts:
SUPER+SHIFT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = draw fire
SUPER+SHIFT+C = clear fire
CTRL+ALT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+LEFT ARROW = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+DOWN ARROW = flat desktop
SHIFT+ALT+UP=initiate window picker
CTRL+ALT+DOWN=unfold cube
ALT+TAB=window switch
SUPER+TAB=flip switcher or ring switcher depending on which is enabled.
ALT+F7=initiate 'move windows'
SHIFT+F9=water effect
SHIFT+F10=slow animations
CTRL+ALT+D=show desktop

For Grouping and Tabbing:
SUPER+S=Select Single Window
SUPER+T=Tab Group
SUPER+Left=Change Left Tab
SUPER+Right=Change Right Tab
SUPER+G=Group Windows
SUPER+U=Ungroup Windows
SUPER+R=Remove Group Window
SUPER+C=Close Group
SUPER+X=Ignore Group
hold the super button then select the windows you want to group and then hit super+g

also You can add new shortcuts.. all that you have to do is just you can select one of the plugin(double click on it) and in actions tab of the plugin, under bindings you can change the shortcuts. You can even add a screen edge as a binding so that when you move your mouse cursor to screen edge(say top left) compiz will execute the particular action. It goes really nice with expo plugin. have a great time with compiz fusion!
(the one with windows logo on it (in some keyboards along with windows logo "start" is printed)
This is the super key..

And dont worry the community is there to help you out in crisis...:)

Enjoy!

Bhavani Shankar.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, and my information is outdated by six months, but as far as I know you cannot get 3d desktop effects running on SiS chips. I hope I am wrong (and I will be monitoring this thread in case I am), but a quick google turns up this:
http://taufanlubis.wordpress.com/2007/08/19/can-i-run-beryl-compiz-or-compiz-fusion-in-my-pc-or-laptop/

I have exactly the same video chip as you in my laptop. Sadly compiz/beryl have never worked for me, due to the lack of decent drivers from SiS.

Call me boring, but my screen saver is a black screen which doesn't move (by choice).

Yes anything to do with 3d graphics on my laptop is slow and skips. This includes games like planet penguin racer; nifty space simulation things like celestia and anything else that uses 3d rendering.

This may all change one day, if SiS decides to release some drivers for Linux (ATI and nVidia both do), or if developers are able to reverse engineer the SiS chip.

If this is in a laptop, it is highly unlikely it is changeable... mine isn't but I have heard some dells are changeable. It would be best to talk to whoever made the laptop and see if you can upgrade the video card.

For your presentation you could focus on the other features of linux, such as the package update system. It is much better than windows update, since it keeps all your software up to date.

If that's too business-ey and not cool enough, try MythTV (www.mythtv.org), that's some nifty software to record tv, like a TiVo does (only on steroids -- I can set recordings and watch them over the internet from my home computer). Note to do this you would need a capture card, but you can still play around with Mythtv because it also rips DVDs, plays music, shows the weather forecast and other stuff. It does require a bit of configuration and tweaking so if your presentation is soon maybe leave myth out to familiarize yourself to it.

Install kstars -- it is a desktop planetarium software which allows you to map the sky where you are. If you have a serial telescope, it can aim the telescope at certain things. Right click and download images from the Hubble telescope and others for particular points in the sky.

Like listening to music? Try installing and playing with Amarok, one of the best music players and organizers. I haven't found anything to equal amarok in ability for organization of music, transferring to devices (like ipods), showing lyrics and statistics on what I listen to.

All of these items can be installed by going to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager, and searching for the names.

Black screensavers are my choice. I disabled the fancy one in favour of the black, since it uses less power when on battery (no processor required to calculate the pretty pictures). If I do any of the 3d desktops, they do skip.

Dear o.k,

I'm sorry for not being able to stay and help, but we all need to sleep sometime ^_^

Okay, so I see that you are having problems enabling 3D support. Have installed the appropriate drivers for your graphics card?

To see if your graphics card requires restricted drivers, please run the command: "restricted-manager &" from a terminal. The interface for it is fairly straight-forward.

If your graphics card does not require restricted drivers, we will have to find another solution.

Dear o.k,

It appears that your graphics card does not need restricted drivers; however, I fear that Allen Chemist may be correct when he claimed that the 3D-rendering for your graphics card is largely unsupported at this time. I guess your card goes into the 315 series, although i'm not an expert when it comes to the SiS chips. There are some drivers for SiS cards in development but not for this series. You can refer to this page to check the status: http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/SiS.

Unfortunately that means that there is no support for accelerated graphics for your card and it won't change shortly.
