compiz and dual screens 7.10

Asked by Sidarth Dasari

Hi, So I just installed ubuntu over my old kubuntu installation. Its running 7.10. The menus in screens and graphics were not detecting my settings correctly so I went ahead and edited my xorg just to use the resolutions I knew worked. I changed the mode for both monitors to only use the resolution I wanted.

What I did notice after enabling my second monitor was that compiz stopped working. I am using xineorama, but would that affect compiz?
When I run the command: compiz
in console I get the following message

Checking for Xgl: not present.

Starting gtk-window-decorator
The program 'gtk-window-decorator' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter)'.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well I went and installed xserver-xgl and now compiz works fine, but it seems my computer uses both monitors as one giant monitor. When I maximize a window, it maximized across both monitors instead of sticking to one like it used to. Also some menus are a bit difficult to read because of this. They get pushed off the side of the screen because the monitors are of different resolutions. Any way of fixing this?
