Then I right clicked and hit change desktop background to see if I could make any changes, then it goes to a black screen with message like it does when it shuts down, then it makes the error noise and takes me to a screen with the default ubuntu background with a cursor and does nothing. Are you able to log in with an Ubuntu Classic session, as actionparsnip asked about? To do this, select "Ubuntu Classic" or "Ubuntu Classic (no effects)" as the session type. This is in the bar at the bottom of the login screen, after you have specified your username, as you are being prompted for your password.

I do not have a log in screen it just automatically loads my desktop. I will put in hibernate and then see if it loads the login screen. It is just really frustrating me.

Can you log off at all?

Indeed, hibernating will not give you a login screen, but logging off will.

I cant log off or do anything all I can do is shut it down or restart or put it in hibernation its really annoying. Im just going to redownload the software and restore it. The netbook is a pos I bought it used and I should have just bought a brand new one.

There is a file which controls autologin. If you can find it before I do then hold shift at boot, select recovery mode then select root. Edit the file in nano, save the new file by pressing Ctrl+X, press Y then press Enter. Reboot and you can change the login. I have systems circa 1995 running ubuntu, I'd imagine your system is far better than most of my computers so will be ok.

The file is /etc/gdm/custom.conf. See post #5 at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+question/154671 for details.
