I have installed 11.04: compiz lost my desktop

I have installed 11.04. I then installed Compiz and enabled the rotate cube. The screen locked up and when I rebooted, Ive lost my desktop - left hand toolbar gone and icons - all I have is the desktop wallpaper. I havent gotta reinstall the OS have I?... If I need to reinstall compiz how do I get to any of the files - I have nothing but a wallpaper!!!

Yes, I can get the classic desktop, after a bit of fiddling.

I have tried everything in that two links..but still the problem exists for me in in version 11.10 oneiric
but i could login into ubuntu 2D without any problem and everything is just old as before...but not in usual ubuntu login

Please describe what happened when you ran "unity --reset". Are you saying that nothing happened at all?

I assume that running "gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz" and then rebooting did not fix the problem?

Two wholly new questions:

(1) What happens when you run "compiz --replace"?

(2) Did you update from Natty to Oneiric, or did you perform a fresh installation? If the latter is the case, and this bug occurred immediately, then this is probably a bug that exists in both Natty and Oneiric.

Can you help with this problem?
