Need to re-run the 11.04 upgrade

Asked by Richard Szulewski

I ran the Natty 11.04 upgrade last night. I am noticing a LOT of screen write errors, scroll bars missing, some applications like Lotus Notes are not displaying key parts of their screens. While Firefox and SameTime and Symphony all work okay. Lotus Notes is essentially unusable.

Yes, I removed and reinstalled Notes including a reboot but the problems remain.

FYI, I noticed with 11.04, the Lucid "logo" used to be displayed during the boot is not there. The screen is a clutter of bits of light. The desktop does start correctly.

A friend noted that I did the upgrade with an external monitor installed. Since my issues all revolve around the display stuff, I would like to re-do the 11.04 install with only my laptop display plugged in.

I cannot figure out how to get the update manager to re-do the install. I am not that skilled so the notion of pulling down a new copy of the release and re-installing will likely mean I will lose my application settings and data.

Can I convince the update manager (or some other tool) to just re-do the upgrade?

You can do something similar--you can reconfigure packages that were installed/upgraded in the release upgrade from Maverick to Natty. There is one specific package that is likely to be related to the problems you are having: compiz. Therefore, you might try opening a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and running:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure compiz

(To run a command, paste--or carefully type--it into the Terminal and press enter. You may be prompted for your password when you run this command. You won't see any placeholder characters (like *) as you enter it. That's OK--just type it in and press enter.)

I don't necessarily expect that to fix the problem--upgrading while using the external monitor should not have caused a configuration that isn't functional with the internal monitor, and this doesn't seem to be an issue of which monitor it's preparing the interface elements for. But there's no harm in trying that.

If it doesn't work, please post a reply, and please include the text from the Terminal (Edit > Select All; Edit > Copy) from when you ran the above command.

Thank you for your suggestion. I ran the reconfigure command as typed. I was prompted for my password which I provided. The command appeared to complete with no messages displayed in the terminal window. I started Update Manager but it found no outstanding upgrades to run. I started the Synaptic Package Manager and asked it to reinstall compiz which it did. I have not rebooted yet but I am still seeing the same display errors.

Did I miss a step? Is a reboot needed?

At minimum, logging out and back in is needed. A reboot is a good idea. But compiz is already installed--you're not going to see anything in the Update Manager from doing this. All this did was to redo the process of configuring compiz, in case that was done wrong in the first place.

After rebooting, if this problem continues (and it very well may), please post again.

Can you help with this problem?
