enabling extra effects (compiz)

Asked by Petlov33

I've been having some trouble enabling the extra effects under the apearance/visual effects tab and perhaps consequently any sort of compiz effects as well. I've also been seeing some split images and generally wacky behavior when watching any sort of videos in firefox but it seems to be occurring at random. I've installed the third-party drivers available from the ubuntu software center (jockey-gtk) and have a catalyst control center. My monitor doesn't appear under the GUI, stating "Monitor unknown" but the resolution and refresh rate are spot on for the monitor's settings. Hitting "Detect Monitor" comes to no avail.

This is a newly built rig and from my understanding this is probably a driver-related issue. I'm using an ATI HD 5750 video card. Under catalyst info I get:

OpenGL version - 4.0.10237

driver packaging - 8.78.3-100920a-105558C-ATI

2D driver version - 8.78.30

catalyst control center - 2.13

R&R version - 1.3

The bios is new, reading 10/08/10.

My first run with Linux and am trying to avoid buying a new videocard seeing as I built an amd phenom II rig with crossfire support which I will be using soon. I have win7 installed for gaming and crossfire support was a big reason why I built the rig so dumping the videocard for an nvidia, even though from what I've been reading ATi cards generally stink with linux compatibility, is just not an option. Thanks in advance

I removed the above drivers and installed the latest drivers from the ATI/AMD website and am still having the same issue.

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.42&lang=English

removed the above drivers first and then modified the .run and ran it thru terminal, no errors were reported and everything seemed to install fine but upon reboot I'm having the same exact problems.
