Missing title bar

Asked by theqool

I currently have Ubuntu 7.04

I had seen a similar question posed in Question #9702, but because it was a list of five questions, it wasn't really answered. I had recently tried the desktop effects, then installed beryl. However, now the title bar in every application has disappeared, and when I open up the terminal, all I get is a giant white box that won't display anything I type. It would be nice if someone knows how to bring back the title bars, but I think that I may have to end up reinstalling Ubuntu. I also have installed Automatix, so I'm not sure if that might be what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've run into this as well. Have you tried turning off ALL desktop effects? I've found that it's about the only way to get the title bar back after that. I think they might use an overlay for a 3D effect on the title bar, causing a problem on some video cards.

Thank you for those who tried to help. I just gave up and reinstalled Ubuntu and everything I had previously, but now everything works fine.

I had the same problem. A missing title bar means that you can't easily minimize, maximise, close or even move an applications window.

The problem is with desktop settings. I had installed Compiz Desktop and had enabled a few settings. Then, after a reboot, no title bars. The settings also prevented me from switching workspace. After disabling all the effects everything started to work (without a reboot). Now it's a case of enabling one, reboot, check, enable another one, reboot, check, enab.........
