This seems to be reproducable by activating the gnome screensaver and then unlock the screen.

I cant confirm that this can be reproduced with the method you say
because I had already installed the update before I read this message.
If u need me to roll back to verify that your method to reproduce this
is right on my system, I can. I just tried it and it was fine, so I
can confirm that the bug is not reproduceable in this way with the
latest patch....

Yes, I got an email earlier that this bug was fixed with the latest patch.
I've had no problems since either.

The crash is still there but harder to trigger now

I'll assign this bug to compiz-fusion-plugins-main as the bug seems to be in the workarounds plugin.

The aplications in use at moment ocurred error: x-terminal, Downloader for X, Firefox, Nautilus and Synaptic.

compiz.real crashed when updating list of updates in updates manager. A crash report was uploaded, but i don't know where it went.

Compiz crashed several times a day for me when I installed Hardy a few days ago. That's how I found this bug. However, it has been updated a couple times since then. Compiz has not crashed at all today or yesterday. I currently have no real problems with hardy. I would like a more stable flash plugin, but that's a whole different issue. hardy is pretty much the same as Gutsy was.

I spoke too soon. it crashed again today. I was just using firefox as normal and it crashed. a crashed compiz really messed up my AWN.

I just wanted to say that I ve the same probleme with gusty as with Hardy...
I didn't in stall any extra packages for compiz on both system.

Acutally i can confirm. After recovering from a standby or hibernate, it just crashes.

Compiz crashes whenever I'm doing anything related to package management here, or whenever I do anything related to the software repositories ...

the lastest update appears to have helped. Before that update, it crashed randomly, as evidenced by everyone else above. After the update, it has crashed for me twice, both times at the same time firefox crashed. We'll see how that goes. I wish i could get firefox to stop crashing.

also, since the last updates of compiz and AWN, awn comes right back up properly once compiz is restarted.

Crashed at start up after: was messing with screenlets then restarted - compiz crashed :(

dont know if im writing in the right thread but, im on arch 32bit desktop on a update-manager -d, after updating to the new kernel today compiz crashed for a split second after login, and posted nautilus cant be used at the moment cause of a failure..... or something like that, running Hardy by the way, kernel 2.6.24-7-generic

I wanna share my observations relative to spontaneous compiz crashes.

1. This crash occurs only under conditions of hi load average and insufficient free RAM:

top - 18:45:56 up 1 day, 1:46, 4 users, load average: 6.41, 6.37, 4.32
Tasks: 140 total, 5 running, 135 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 19.4%us, 4.0%sy, 0.8%ni, 68.0%id, 7.1%wa, 0.3%hi, 0.6%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 515608k total, 506132k used, 9476k free, 7632k buffers
Swap: 2345436k total, 542644k used, 1802792k free, 119528k cached

2. Usually such conditions reached when many applications loaded, and I try to switch between them or start new big application (such as firefox or evolution)

3. Also I've mentioned that probability of a crash increases during installation of new packages (i.e. .deb packets being unpacked and installed). I suppose that working dpkg/aptitude consume much CPU/RAM in parallel with heavy input-output, which leads to abnormally hi load average

4. Before every crash the system becomes completely unresponsive for a few seconds. It also may occur because of hi load, but maybe compiz freezes just before crash?

Hardy has been under a much higher load all the time for me, just using firefox, flash, and compiz keeps this thinkpad r51 quite busy. Earlier versions of ubuntu ran just fine, usually the CPU was throttled down, and I got much longer battery life. Hardy needs to be updated everyday, even twice a day, which stresses it alot too. I first want the compuz fixed, than i hope they reduce resource usage. I won't be buying a new laptop until I really need it. I bought the thinkpad because they don't break, so it could be awhile.

I was forced to do that already. As my laptop is toshiba and Hardy still
doesn't support toshiba's touchpad. It was quite difficult to work with it
as at work I don't connect mouse.

on the high load subject, my mt-3422 is a dual core 64bit system; crash is detected even if only one app is running (in this case update-manager itself).

I only had synaptic and the game Powermanga running when the crash occurred.

Crashed for me when I exited Synaptic Package Manager. I downloaded debug symbols, but don't know how to get the core dump extracted from the crash file to do a backtrace. I just finished a 7.10 upgrade to 8.04 and got this crash within the first few minutes so don't know if it will repro, but since I was directed to launchpad thought I'd add my 2 cents. crash file attached.

I've downloaded the debug symbol package so I could probably get a backtrace if someone can tell me how to extract the core dump (assuming that would help). Thanks.

win22, how do you know you have the same crash as in this bug? Which version of ubuntu are you using? What's the version of your compiz and of your compiz-fusion-plugins-main package?

mine was like this. that i did dist-upgrade to 8.04 alfa release. and after that compiz.real was taking ~95% of processor resources... and pretty frequently it just crashed (usually when i started x, then in the begging of the session [within 1st minute]). anyway. it didn't always crash, but anyway. i had to kill it, because i was unable to do anything else... i tried 'replace --metacity' but it didn't work. yes. when i switched to console then compiz was normal (taking maybe 1% orsmth).

metacity --replace i mean

This happened to me this way:

Logged in just fine, pressed ctrl+alt+backspace, relogged in and crashed. Nothing seems to have been affected by it though, compiz runs fine as far as i can tell.

Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

enrique, what you are describing sounds like a completly different bug. Note that zattoo is unsupported in Ubuntu.

Thanks. Everything works fine at the moment, except flash sound in firefox
and the embedded usb camera (8.10 development branch). Tattoo in not
installed.

This bug reoccured after wiping out my previous partition by manually reformatting the entire harddisk to install Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. This way I could top up my Huawei E220 and E169 modem for 3 Mobile Broadband. They also have to run once under Windows before they will work without further hacking under network-manager 0.7.0.

I then reformatted my 160 GB harddisk into a 2 GB linux-swap and all the rest into ext 3. Both primary partitions. I always used gparted for partitioning. I installed the 8.04 official CD from the ubuntu UK server, md5checksum OK. I did not install a single program or repository.

I upgraded with the following command:

sudo apt-get -fy update ; sudo apt-get -fy upgrade ; sudo apt-get -fy dist-upgrade ; sudo apt-get -fy install ; sudo dpkg --configure -a ; sudo apt-get -fy autoremove ; sudo update-manager -c -d ; sudo synaptic

I restarted with the blue arrows and not sudo reboot. I have nothing plugged in accept the power cable. I have not used any usb modems so far, just fiber optic broadband true my wireless card (and router off course).

Everything went uneventful so far, accept this bug reoccuring. It seems to be asymptomic, but I suggest importance medium as it will probably reoccur for other users.

The wiki page actually does work for intrepid, the only thing you have to change is:

1. Add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list:

      deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com intrepid main universe

Instead of the hardy, hardy-updates/proposed/security lines.

Afterwards, install the necessary packages with -dbgsym (compiz-core-dbgsym, compiz-plugins-dbgsym, compiz-gnome-dbgsym, compiz-fusion-plugins-main-dbgsym, compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-dbgsym, and maybe others), and go on with:

"a. Now you make a Backtrace. (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace)"

I'm sorry, I'm a total noob. I'm running the 32 bit on a 64bit machine and don't totally understand crash reports. The warning came up this morning after I installed the beta on this machine last night. I said yes to sending it as I figure any information can help.

This is a backup machine in our house and has lots of trouble with the wireless on 8.04 which runs great on the rest of our house and so I thought I'd try 8.10 out as it's not critical.

The report for the crash came up just after I booted and opened firefox. Sorry I can't help more than that.

I think there might be a bug in the subscription system. I've unsubscribed myself and I still receive these. Though it has only started happening again very recently.
