clamtk shows 0 virus signatures

Asked by steve hussey

Recently installed clamtk gui etc from ubuntu repository. I now know to use the command sudo freshclam to update the program and it is reporting virus definitions are current and up to date. However, checking Help and then System information will show 0 signatures and no date. Build is ClamAV version 0.95.3.

Why is this?

I know that this is an older version, but it is one supported by Ubuntu.

Greg,

I followed directions, all is ok but for an outdated antivirus engine.  Version is the same as reported before.  Additionally, quick home scan shows no files scanned, it is finished in less than a second, but it does work in (Home) recursive.  AV signatures current as of 6/7/2010.  I show 1,128 files scanned (fresh install of os) in a little over four minutes.

Thanks for the help.

The reason for the av is to ensure clean files when those files are transferred to a Windows system with no internet access.

Greg,

I have done this twice now.  Both times I got the same result - av engine is the old one.  What am I doing wrong?

BTW, one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and still expecting different results.

Greg,

I have been busy since the seventh. Going to Advanced, clicking new preferences, saving, and restarting does not make any difference. Neither does uninstalling the old version and installing the new version in it's place. Single user is what this computer is, so that has been checked since the beginning. It was my understanding that the new was to be installed over the old as an upgrade, but still the old obsolete virus engine remains. I do not see a checkbox for the av engine in Help, Check for updates, but do see virus def updates and GUI version updates.

Something is missing here.

Greg,

Running 8.04.4 LTS with last update applied re adobe flash update on Thursday. This is a fresh install as of June 1. I am not yet running 10.04 although I have tried it and installed it on another machine.

Thanks.

Pardon the entry above. I somehow sent that while typing.

no wounder 8.04 will not fully update ,it is the way clam is set up to . when you update to 10.04 you will still need to update clam the same way as i said above . enjoy 10.04

Greg,

Yeah, I figured that. 8.04.4 LTS is getting long in the tooth, and I am sure development of clam av is no longer focused on 8.04.4. Ergo, the obsolete av engine. IF I could, I would run 10.04 on a HP VLi vectra tower, PIII 600 MHz, 512 RAM, ATI Radeon 9250 256 MB, but live CD boots and goes to desktop. Only thing is, the desktop never shows up, and the screen remains dark. I'm thinking 10.04 does not support this video card?

Thanks for the help. I will run the av just as it is.
