How to use Clamav(antivirus)

Asked by Omar. P

I got clamav and I can't seem to find it. Is it a program? Does it get rid of viruses or just looks for viruses?

ClamAv like almost every antivirus looks for infected files and can quarantine or delete them. If it does that to a system-file then you will need to rplace the file - for linux that's fairly easy but for Windows it might be a bit more tricky to get an uninfected replacement that works on your machine.

There is only 1 antivirus i know of that claims to be able to remove a virus leaving the infected file uninfected but i haven't used it on a Windows system and the antivirus hasn't been updated since before Vista was launched so i really doubt its can do what it claims.

As Marcobra said i too would recommend getting "clamtk" because it's a good front-end giving a nice gui to help with using clamscan. I used to prefer using clamscan from the command-line
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal
try typing

clamscan --help

to get a quick help cheat-sheet on how to use that. The gui has a very "retro" look but does use the ultra-latest clamscan very effectively and helps make most of the tasks much easier.

I hope this helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ps i assume you have seen this guide?
