Ubuntu 11.04 Firewall/Security

Asked by Heath on 2011-11-07

I am running dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 or Windows Vista HP....more and more booting directly to Ubuntu.
Should I worry about security? I installed under recommendation clamTK :

sudo apt-get install clamav clamtk

when I open ClamTK virus Scanner it says AntiVirus engine and GUI version are both out of date.....how do I get "current" up to date pkg?

Thanks Again For Your Time In This Matter!!

To get the ClamAV virus definitions up to date, open a terminal and use the command:
sudo clamav-freshclam
To update the GUI, follow this link, download the .deb file, double-click on it to install:

I must however note that running an antivirus under Ubuntu is quite useless as of this time. The majority of viruses in the wild can infect only Microsoft Windows systems, Linux/Ubuntu is immune to them. It's more important to check that the Ubuntu firewall is active (use the gufw program for that).

Yes indeed, that updated everything, and found Ubuntu firewall /Ubuntu Desktop Guide...I do apologize I am quickly learning that about Ubuntu/Linux security....I have been infected by that Windows Mind Virus...no more!

Thank You For Your Time And Patience.

Thanks Alessandro Menti, that solved my question.

Your question's title suggests that you are also interested in knowing about setting up a Firewall in Ubuntu. This is a separate topic from malware scanning. ClamAV is not a firewall.

If you want to know about that too, please post a separate question about that. (You may also be able to find the answers quickly by searching the web, though...)
