Can a virus downloaded on Ubuntu infect my Windows partition?

Hi, I'm a Ubuntu beginner. So a stupid question here...
I'm running a duel boot system, Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7. I'm also using a external hard drive.
It is possible that a Windows virus might be downloaded when I'm using Ubuntu and infect Windows and my external hard drive when I switch to Windows 7? Thanks for any help!

Yes, it can be possible. If you want sure that what you download is not a virus for Windows, you can use antivirus on Windows or on Ubuntu, like clamav:
