Is a virus protection program still advisable when using Ubuntu, and if so, what is recommended?

Asked by Andrea Summerfield

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 as my operating system. It is recommended to install an antivirus program, and if so, which one is recommended as the best for this version of Linux?

You only need AV if you are running a mail server or a file server with windows clients. I recommend ClamAV personally but the ones mentioned in the link John gave are great too.

You can install the latest clamAV + definitions with:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-clamav/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y install clamav clamtk; sudo freshclam

You can then use the GUI or CLI to scan:
