Missing AVG AntiVirus Launcher

Asked by peterwilliams60

New to Ubuntu and relatively inexperienced with computers.
Ubuntu 10.10 installed flawlessly. It is the sole OS on my IBM ThinkCentre M50.

My financial institution insists that the PC must have antivirus installed, even with Ubuntu as its OS, if I am to be indemnified against online banking fraud. I state this in passing and would like to leave this "Pandora's Box" unopened.

The only free Debian version of AVG appears to be for Linux Servers and as I had read in a forum that it could be used on a workstation I downloaded and installed it.
It appears to have installed properly as "avg85flx" is visible in the Synaptic Package Manger with a green square adjacent to it but there is no sign of AVG in Applications, System Preferences or System Administration.
I found this link that applies to earlier versions of the OS and Antivirus - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus/Avg
Will this work for AVG 8.5 or is there another solution.

Many thanks for your help and for any step by step instructions.

Best regards

Peter

run:

gksudo gedit /usr/share/applications/avg.desktop

add this text:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=AVG Antivirus
Comment=Antivirus
Exec=gksudo avggui &
Icon=/opt/grisoft/avggui/prog/pixmaps/avgico_big.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;System;

Save the new file, close gedit then run:

killall gnome-panel

It will now be there.

Thank you for your prompt and detailed response.

Copied and pasted the supplied information into Ubuntu 10.10.

When I now click on the Applications Menu a new sub menu called System Tools is seen just above Ububtu Software Centre. When I click on this new label (System Tools) another sub menu entitled AVG Antivirus appears. A grey square with a ? is seen immediately to the left of the words AVG Antivirus.
When I double click on AVG Antivirus the "timer" icon appears and then disappears but AVG does not open.

Any further help would be most appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi actionparsnip,

My enquiry in my first post was whether I should follow the instructions in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus/Avg or whether there was another solution. I did not follow the instructions in the link.

I followed the instructions in your post of 2011-01-09.

Please advise if you would like me to follow the instructions in the link or is there another solution.

Many thanks for your help.

Best regards

Peter

Tried the instructions in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus/Avg and the result was the same as previously:

When I click on the Applications Menu a new sub menu called System Tools is seen just above Ububtu Software Centre. When I click on this new label (System Tools) another sub menu entitled AVG Antivirus appears. A grey square with a ? is seen immediately to the left of the words AVG Antivirus.
