antivirus for ubuntu 10.04

i tried to install BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb on my ubuntu 10.04 32-bit but that did not happen.Icould not find the reason for that.I also tried installing AVG free for linux but do not succeed.Please tell me what the problem is and guide me to install a better antivirus to protect my laptop.Please ensure that it should work on my ubuntu.

you don't really need an antivirus for ubuntu, there are no viruses in ubuntu. But you can install one to protect windows users that share data with you. The easiest one to install is ClamAv. Just open Terminal and type: sudo apt-get install clamav.

There are virus for Linux of which Ubuntu is a derivative of, to think an OS has no virus' is incredibly ignorant. The virus' do exist but they are not wild and mostly explored in test suites.

I wouldnt worry about viruses as the majority are Windows based and Ubuntu isnt windows. If you run a mail server or samba server to share with windows PCs then AV is good as it stops windows systems infecting each other. Here is a good link for AVG:
