If it's a PPA, contact the PPA maintainer.

The PPA maintainer is « Ubuntu developers » and there is no way contacting them.

Do you mean that PPA

Or are you confusing the name of the OFFICIAL Ubuntu sources which are called "repositories". These are the official source of packages. PPAs are where people package things for their own usage....

Thanks for your message. I was talking about the official Ubuntu sources, the repositories.

Then those aren't PPAs. Those are repositories and (as you say) maintained by the Ubuntu team. PPA stands for Personal Package Archive which are managed by teams or individuals to hold packages. They are 3rd party sources.

VERY different.

If you submit a bug stating the security and bug fixes in the newer version of Chromium, then the package will be updated sooner. If the gains are slim then priority will be given to other packages with greater needs. You can start this process with:

ubuntu-bug chromium-browser

Package updates just becoase a new one exists are rare in Ubuntu. This is especially true in the LTS release.

Thanks for your precise answer. In fact, Chromium 38 fixes a lot of security issues, hence my question.

I installed Google Chrome 38 in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS today using these commands:

wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

Chromium is behind even in 14.10 so this is not LTS-related.

Google Chrome 38 was released more than a month ago. I'm not competent to assess the "gains" of the 159 security fixes listed here in http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.in/2014/10/stable-channel-update.html but one of them was awarded USD 27633.70.

Users of the Chromium browser need to be aware that the browser is still, despite people employed by Canonical being in the team, present in the Universe section and not in Main. That means that Canonical has no responsibility in keeping Chromium updated.

I just felt it necessary to point this out because users could be misled by the description provided by "apt-cache show chromium-browser":
Description-en: Chromium browser
Chromium is an open-source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster,
and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web.
 .
Chromium serves as a base for Google Chrome, which is Chromium rebranded (name
and logo) with very few additions such as usage tracking and an auto-updater
 system.

How are they misled? The description is accurate.

I am fully aware of the differences between chromium and chrome and it is a bit more than what you listed. There is no autoupdater in chrome per-se, the deb just adds the gpogle repository. Chrome itself does not autoupdate within itself.

Misled by not having the version that is ***safer*** if any of the security fixes in Chrome 38 are absent in Chromium 37.

Also, what is the point in describing Google Chrome for ***Linux*** as having an autoupdater. What's accurate about that?

It would be nice if there's some sort of explanation as to why Chromium stable isn't being updated. Firefox is. I hope this doesn't turn out to be an ownCloud type of situation.
