Xubuntu 11.10 doesn't remember default browser selection

Asked by Don Campbell

I like everything about Xubuntu 11.10 except one annoying bug: it doesn't remember my choice of default browser (Google Chrome) and it doesn't remember my keyring password. At every login, I have to re-select Google Chrome as the default, and re-enter my keyring password.

I know that this issue has been raised before, but I have seen no responses to previous inquiries about this issue. (I could have missed them, of course.) I hope someone -- preferably someone from the development team -- will finally respond and let us know when this bug will be fixed.

Thanks!

Set a blank keyring password and you won't be hassled for it. Try running:

sudo update-alternatives –config x-www-browser

And set the browser. Might make it stick

Thanks for your reply.

When I run that, I get: error: unknown argument `–config'

Thanks for the suggestion about setting the blank keyring password -- a good workaround, but I am wondering when the team will get around to actually fixing these problems.

It's two dashes:
    sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
I presume Andrew's text editor replaced automatically the two dashes by a large one. When software thinks it's clever than user!

Same problem here, but the fix doesn't help. I get:
There is only one alternative in link group x-www-browser: /usr/bin/chromium-browser
Nothing to configure.

and chromium still isn't my default, and the menu entry brings up the same dialog.

I strongly suspect chromium-browser.

I actually opened a bug on this a while back...

#902661 Chromium unsets preferred webbrowser (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser/+bug/902661)

It contains a work-around for the problem - use XUbuntu system setting to select your default webbrowser (i.e. Chromium) but do NOT set Chromium to default browser in Chromium itself.

Works for me...

Can you help with this problem?
