greg proposed the following answer:
do this copy and past one line at a time into the terminal then press enter . you will not see your password
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner”
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

line three will give you an error that is ok just keep going . restart
and try .

I was trying to speed up my sons PC and
so I tried Chromium and could not get java
to work. Si I installed Lubuntu and BAM!!
his PC is much much faster.

So I reinstalled firefox and deleted Chromium
and all is well...
