Chromium stable in 10.04

Asked by skyhard

I think it would be a great idea to update Chromium in Ubuntu 10.04 to the newest 5.0.375.55 version now that it has gone stable! The browser is really awsome! Also many, many users would be very happy to make it the default browser in Maverick.

Until it is updated (if they decide to it) you can download it from https://launchpad.net/~chromium-daily/+archive/stable

I know I can download it from the addedd repository;) But it would be gret if Ubuntu included (update) it to the newset version in their repository. Hope they do it:)

Log a bug stating what features / bug fixes and security updates the new version has, if they are significant the it will be fasttracked. Otherwise the normal 3 month package review will take place and it will be updated with time.

The chromium daily build is pretty sweet and is what I use.

this is why it will not make default

What is your current browser of choice for Linux?

    * Firefox (60%)
    * Chrome (27%)
    * Opera (6%)
    * Other? (4%)
    * Internet Explorer (okay, that's a joke) (2%)
    * Konqueror (1%)
    * Epiphany (1%)
 the numbers tell the tail of gets to be default .. firefox 4.0 will be even greater than chrome. check it out .

Most used doesn't mean best.

What is the OS on your PC:
~70% Windows
~20% MAC
~10% Windows

(Source: My guestimate)

anyhoo Windows has more but does that make it better? No it doesn't

Chromium is default in LUbuntu and will be in KDE based distros (from what I have read) in later releases.

Well anyway, it would be great if the they updated the Chromium version to 5.0.375.55 on Lucid in the universe, because its way more stable and is much better suited for a LTS release!

I wouldn't use firefox if you paid me.

It depends on what a user gets used to. The browsers are not that different acctualy. Firefox was here for a much longer time, but the chromium team did a tremendeus job on getting chromium to this quite mature point that it is in now. Nevertheless, I think that in the future IE, Firefox and Chrome/ium will become more and more alike, and their market share will be pretty evenly balanced out. So its not wich one is better, its about what users prefer. And objectively having a feature that a user prefers is what makes a browser better for that user.

Is this still an issue? The question is only marked as answered and hasn't been updated in well over a year...

lucid-updates and lucid-security have the same version of chromium-browser as precise (and actually a newer version than oneiric-updates, as this version is still in oneiric-proposed). So no, this is no longer an issue. Chromium is available in its latest version to all Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx users who have at least the lucid-security repository enabled (which of course is the case by default).
