Logitech, quick cam zoom 8.04

Asked by Jan Tijssen

My Logitec Web cam (LTS 8.04) does not work, however:
lsusb gives:
Bus 005 Device 005: ID 0baf:0121 U.S. Robotics
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 03f0:2605 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 046d:c505 Logitech, Inc. Cordless Mouse+Keyboard Receiver
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:08b4 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Zoom
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

When I disconnect and reconnect this Webcam, it works like a charm, Skype, Camorama (can adjust settings) etc.

But why does it not work when booted/ from boot and starts working when I disconnect en reconnect the WEBCAM.
FYI, Build in (in WEB-cam) Microphone works fine

try restarting hal when you first boot, if that makes it work then add the command or a script with the command in when you log on.

sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart

Logitech do not support linux to well so you will have to work around what has been developed to make them work.

This does not solve the problem. Same same thing.
Only disconnect en reconnect does do the job.

I must say, -maybe this helps- the problem started after installing cheese (which did not work, so I uninstalled it-.
Before the camera worked for months.....

possibly, try installing cheese again. See if its nice.

You could also read through

dmesg | less

to see your system wake up and it may give clues as to why it is dropping the camera. If you also read through:

sudo lshw | less

you may see a module associated with the camera which you can them rmmod then immediately modprobe to maybe get the device working.

Hello actionparsnip,

thank you for the response.
I have installed cheese, no change. I got a colofull display with in the right down corner en "noise" screen.
When I diconnect and reconnect the camera, cheese works also great.
(Did not test the connect/ disconnect thing before)

The rest of the message is somthing beyond my "know-how" and experience. I need a more detailed instruction..... sorry, I just switched over to Ubuntu completely and uses Windows only for "word" and "Excel".
This is my dmesg output after connect/ disconnect:

This has effects:

After this "Cheese" works, but Camorama does not (Could not connect to video device (/dev/video0)
Skype does not work neither. However, is show the test button but gives /dev/video2 as video device.
I can press the "test" button, but no test picture.

So, yes, progress but no definite solution yet.

In the mean time, I really appreciate your help!!!

I have found out the following, relevancy unknown, sorry.... :-(

When command as mentioned 'sudo rmmod uhci_hcd; sleep 5; sudo modprobe uhci_hcd' I can not get the WEB-cam working witch disconnect/ connecting the webcam as before this command.
After a reboot, old situation (see initial question) is valid.

Jan

Today I tried to get the Web-Cam going, no success.
However, maybe somebody can help me with the following:

How can I monitor or find out what is happening at the moment when I am disconnecting and reconnecting the WEB-cam......and is starts working?

Eureka!

Found the solution. I removed the package "Motion".....
Can't remember when I installed is, but I am sure this was around the time the WEB stopped to work spontaneously from boot.

Some how, this package takes the WEB-CAM so no other application can get a hold on it.

Next step is off-course to see how Motion exactly works...

Actionparsnip, although I did not hear from you this week, nevertheless thank you for the support.
