cheese is failing over ssh in ubuntu 16.04

I have my laptops linked via ssh and the "server" laptop running ubuntu 16.04 whereas the "client" running ubuntu 14.04. I tried starting cheese over ssh but get this error:

(cheese:8178): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strsplit: assertion 'string != NULL' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

any ideas?

Do other Webcam applications work OK? You can try VLC using:

vlc v4l2:///dev/video0
