intrepid upgrade breaks cheese

Asked by edkademan

I have a Dell xpsm1530 laptop with a builtin webcam. Under ubuntu
8.04 I was able to start up the "cheese" application and it "just
worked." I could view the camera output on the screen and take
pictures and video. But after upgrading to 8.10 it no longer does.
The application starts up but it doesn't show anything. It won't even
quit cleanly. Dpkg shows that my version of cheese is
2.24.1-0ubuntu1.

I've got the same laptop and same problem, and it's a known bug (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cheese/+bug/290506/). The 2.6.27 kernel now includes its own video drivers and it seems that they don't all quite work yet.

The webcam will probably work if you set the resolution to 176x144 or lower - you can do this with Edit / Preferences in cheese. Even though it then freezes up when you try to close, if you force close it and then restart cheese you should get video (on my laptop, there is a delay of a few seconds before it starts).

On a different topic, the microphone sensitivity control is also gone in Intrepid for this laptop's audio chipset. It used to be listed under 'Digital' in gnome-volume-control preferences, but it isn't detected anymore. I sure hope they fix both problems soon!

Can you help with this problem?
