Webcam problems with Cheese in Ubuntu 11.10

Asked by john Alatalo

Since I installed Ubuntu 11.10 the webcam shows strange colours and so on in Cheese.
Was no problem at all in the previous 11.04 version.

There are some other webcam applications I can use. But I prefeer Cheese.

This Guy (Benjamin Halbrock) got same problem:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/cheese/+bug/875894

I have tryed Cheese in Pardus 2011.2 who recently was released. Works fine there.
So this seems to be a specific problem with the 11.10 version.

The webcam is a Logitech C300

Have you any solution to it?

Logitech C300 suppose to work with Linux:
http://www.quickcamteam.net/devices/logitech_uvc_device_list.pdf

When I install Ubuntu 11.10 and it take a snapshot for my profile it works. Picture is normal then.
And with some other webcam applications to.

It's only with Cheese it works bad. If read at the bug report Benjamin wrote he uses another manufactor and it works bad with Cheese to.
(see the screenshot that are included)

I have no acces to the Ubuntu computer at the moment. But when I do I will try to write more.

It doesn't happen with logitech only.

Sounds like a regression bug then. If it was ok in Natty then I suggest you run:

ubuntu-bug cheese

And report the issue

Same issue here. The webcam works with MPlayer and VLC, but not with applications that work with GStreamer.

I have tested Cheese in Pardus 2011.2:

http://www.pardus.org.tr/en

Works fine there. So this problem are Ubuntu related.

If you have the webcam detached when you boot then log in and run:

dmesg | tail -n 10

You will get the kernel reaction to the device. Do this on both ditributions and compare

I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 at a friends laptop (LG). Cheese works fine there. So it seems like this problem not appears at all computers.
So are it a kernel problem if it works there?
