Cheese Webcam Software Issue

Asked by Daire DeDanann

I've encountered an issue with using Cheese webcam recorder on my machines. I have an i3 notebook, an atom netbook, and two AMD machines.
They are new enough to support webcam and the intel machines actually came with an imbedded webcam, but neither one is working in linux with either the embedded webcam or the usb webcam.
I installed Windows on another partition, modded it(changed the logos and such), and installed Debut recording studio. Debut works fine. So we know its not the webcams that are malfunctioning. Its a software issue.
The Cheese webcam software does load; however, when I move my arm or talk, the software doesn't display it in real time like it does in Debut and it doesn't record properly either. Its like the program is freezing up on me but running enough to torment me.

That doesn't explain why Linux isn't managing my webcam properly. Windows handled it with precision. Why is Linux not handling it? The program Cheese is freezing up when I try to record 1280x720 resolution which my webcam does support.

Maybe I'll just run windows on a virtual machine in VirtualBox OSE and use the webcam video software to record videos...then move the file over to Linux for editing until someone figures webcam driver issue.

You'll need the closed source version for USB access. The OSE version doesn't do USB access. Windows handled it as the makers ofthe device have lovingly crafted drivers for Windows. They have neglected to make Linux ones. If you uninstall the driver from Windows then it will act just as it does in Linux. The fact that hardware works in Windows is of absolutely zero value.
